What is workforce analytics, and is it the same as skills intelligence?
Workforce analytics is the practice of reporting on your workforce from HR system data: headcount, attrition, cost, span of control, time to fill, engagement scores. It is descriptive and it looks backwards. Done well it tells you accurately what happened and what is happening now.
Skills intelligence answers a different question, and it is not one workforce analytics was built for. Your HRIS records that someone holds a job title, sits in a cost centre and completed a course in 2023. It does not record what that person can actually do today. Workforce analytics can only report the fields it is given, so a skills report built on it is really a report on job titles and self-assessments.
The gap is in where the data comes from rather than in the analysis. Skills intelligence infers capability from the work itself, using the systems people use every day, instead of asking them to maintain a profile. That is what turns a backward-looking headcount report into something you can plan a transition against.
Most enterprises need both, and they are not competing purchases. Workforce analytics stays where it is. What changes is the quality of the skills field feeding it.
