WEBINAR: Inside Red Hat's skills journey, powered by TechWolf
Red Hat set out to become a skills-first organization and quickly found that strategy alone would not get it there. It needed reliable skills data. In this session, Tomislav Vujec, Director of Learning at Red Hat, walks through how the company went from a 2,500-person engineering pilot to skill profiles for more than 99% of its roughly 17,000 associates, and how it now puts that data to work.
He is candid about what it took: cleaning up a taxonomy full of duplicate custom skills, keeping associates as the only ones who validate their own profiles, launching without proficiency levels, and working with works councils that ended up asking why the rollout wasn't mandatory.
What you'll take away
- How Red Hat went from an average of five self-entered skills per profile to 21 validated ones, with close to half of associates validating their profile in the first three months.
- How the demand side was built: around 1,400 job profiles averaging 31 skills each, rated at 87.5% precision and 95.4% recall by business leaders in the pilot.
- Why Red Hat treats the associate as the human in the loop for skill supply, and why it launched with skills as binary rather than with proficiency levels.
- What comes next: adaptive learning paths, better matching for internal gigs, new data sources such as Jira, GitHub and Salesforce, and using the TechWolf agent for continuous work redesign.
